Beef | Posts

Miles Ridgway, President of Summit Livestock Facilities a DBA and brand of FBi Buildings Inc., has announced the availability of newly published information about the federal Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and Iowa Department of Natural Resources (IDNR) regulations regarding the permitting and construction of enclosed beef feedlot facilities in Iowa.

According to Ridgway, this new information is being released by Summit Livestock Facilities to help those beef producers who may be unsure of the new and changing beef feedlot permitting requirements in Iowa.

The new information has been written by Nic Rowe P.E. at Pro Ag Engineering of Lakefield, MN, and published by Summit Livestock Facilities as a free service to the beef industry in Iowa.

Rowe is a licensed engineer in Iowa and frequently consults with beef producers and other livestock operators regarding permitting and facilities design.

Subjects in the new publication include:

  • Site restrictions for beef feedlots such as the required setbacks from water sources (creeks rivers) wells sinkholes neighbors road rights of way and public use areas.
  • Beef cattle confinement construction permitting and operating issues such as the requirement for a documented manure management plan (MMP) along with the construction specifications of the proposed new beef barn.
  • Grants and other funding options for the construction of cattle barns including the (NRCS) Natural Resource Conservation Service grants available through the (EQIP) Environmental Quality Incentives Program.

Additional information is included about the low-interest loan program available through the Iowa Department of Natural Resources as well as other resources available to Iowa beef producers for the construction of animal feeding operation structures that improve water quality.
