New Nebraska Beef Feedlot Permitting Information

Miles Ridgway, President of Summit Livestock Facilities a DBA and brand of FBi Buildings Inc., has announced the availability of newly published information about the federal Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and Nebraska Department of Environmental Quality (NDEQ) regulations regarding the permitting and construction of enclosed beef feedlot facilities in Nebraska.

According to Ridgway, this new information is being released by Summit Livestock Facilities to help those beef producers who may be unsure of the new and changing requirements relating to the two permits issued to AFOs in Nebraska:

  • The state Construction and Operating Permit
  • The National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) Permit.

The new information has been written by Nic Rowe, P.E. at Pro Ag Engineering of Lakefield, MN, and published by Summit Livestock Facilities as a free service to the beef industry in Nebraska. Rowe is a licensed engineer in Nebraska and frequently consults with beef producers and other livestock operators regarding permitting and facilities design. 

Subjects in the new publication include:

  • Permit application requirements such as nutrient management plan (NMP) specifications including the mapping of cropland and soil sample results.
  • Factors determining the need for a National Pollution Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) Permit.
  • The importance of understanding Nebraska county-based setback regulations.
  • Available grants for the construction of cattle barns from the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) Natural Resource Conservation Service (NRCS) through the Environmental Quality Incentives Program (EQIP).
