Addressing the PEOPLE factor in swine production
There’s a lot that goes on under one roof – especially when that roof is housing livestock. Beyond the livestock, today’s livestock facilities are home to state-of-the-art precision ag technologies and tools help the animals stay secure, healthy, comfortable, and productive. Technologies in use in animal production monitor conditions such as their eating and drinking behaviors, their weight, their temperature, and their movement around the facilities. Each is designed to support animals in a healthy growing environment. These factors combine to improve animal care and health. Also, they help producers monitor, assess, and address animal well-being in a timely manner.
In many ways, the swine industry is leading the way in employing precision agriculture technologies. These tools have made possible vital advancements in animal production and productivity. However, one of the most significant challenges currently facing the swine industry is not related to pigs, but to humans.
Jonathon Hoek of Summit Precision Production (SPP), a division of Summit Livestock Facilities, recently addressed a record crowd attending the Emerging Technologies session of the 50th Annual meeting of the American Association of Swine Veterinarians in Lake Buena Vista, Florida.
Hoek’s presentation, “HUMATEC™: People – pigs – process – performance: creating the irresistible place to work”, introduced a new system designed to offer a significant paradigm shift in swine production. Hoek said, “By establishing engaging lean processes and continuing improvement, SPP’s HUMATEC provides a transformational step change in pig production. By factoring in the human element with the health, safety, and well-being of the livestock, producers have the potential to provide an efficient, productive, and ultimately more profitable delivery of protein.”
The HUMATEC system is providing important benchmarks critical to driving livestock producers’ profitability. Access the full article here: summitlivestock.com/humatec.
